Russia: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday welcomed the new Ukraine peace proposal prepared by the US. He said that this updated proposal can become the first concrete step towards ending the war. However, he also clarified that no formal talks have taken place with Russia on this plan so far, and “I can understand the reason for this.”
Russia's response was positive, but Ukraine and its European allies disagree. America has not yet been able to convince Ukraine to accept the proposal. Kyiv believes that this plan can benefit Russia in the war zone. Despite this, a part of Western countries is considering taking it forward.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an address that his country is currently at a turning point. He said Ukraine must decide whether to continue fighting to protect its sovereign rights or risk losing US support. He acknowledged that this moment is one of the most difficult periods in the history of Ukraine.
Some old demands of Russia are also included in the American plan. It suggests transfer of some areas by Ukraine to Russia, which Zelensky has repeatedly rejected. With this proposal, Ukraine's army will become smaller, and the path to NATO membership can also be blocked. This is the reason why Ukraine disagrees with this plan.
Zelensky said he spoke for about an hour with US Vice President JD Vance and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. He also said that US President Donald Trump wants a quick response on his 28-point plan, although the deadline can be extended if necessary.
Zelensky indicated that Ukraine was willing to negotiate with both the US and Russia, but he also acknowledged that Ukraine would not get all of its terms. He said the country faces a difficult choice—either the fear of losing respect or the risk of angering its biggest partner.
Germany, France, and Britain have assured full support to Zelensky. European leaders stressed that Ukraine's sovereignty and its security guarantees should be the basis of any peace agreement. The European Union said that Russia's war is an existential threat to all of Europe, so it will stand with Ukraine.
Some European officials say parts of the US proposal are worrying. He believes that a bad deal for Ukraine could undermine the security of all of Europe. Many countries want that any decision should be taken only with the consent of Ukraine and keeping its interests in mind.
